Parish Audit

It is customary for the Catholic Diocese of Lexington to perform an in depth financial audit when a Parish is assigned a new Pastor. That detailed financial audit took place last week. While the final report has not been released, the preliminary indication was that the integrity of our bookkeeping and our internal auditing process was found to be technically sound and fiscally responsible.
When the final report is issued, the Parish Finance Council will convene a "Treasure Sunday" where issues of fiscal importance will be discussed during Masses and questions from Parishioners will be welcomed. We plan to present detailed answers after Mass, during a gathering in the Parish Life Center, about the operating expenses of the church and school, as well as reports on any building or pledge campaigns. Finance Council members will stay until the last question is answered and we invite participation from all Parishioners.
As I speak to fellow Parishioners about Good Shepherd, the incredible spirit of rejuvenation has once again captured the hearts, minds, and souls of our faith community. It is the hope of the Parish Leadership that we can build upon this energy with better communication and a greater awareness of the financial condition of our Church and School. When the date of the first "Treasure Sunday" is announced, please try to set aside some time to attend and to ask questions.

ST. VINCENT de PAUL Report

ST. VINCENT de PAUL
QUARTERLY REPORT ENDING SEPTEMBER 30, 2008
SVDPlogo1_th.jpg

Thanks to our generous parishioners, we were able to help 179 families with clothing, bedding, furniture, kitchenware and fans. Enough food for four/five days was distributed to 463 families. To enable families to stay in their homes, $10,3435.36 was spend for rent. Clients needed their electricity, gas and water so $3,621.51 was paid to the utility companies. The sick and disabled were helped with their prescription medications totaling $2,650.11. The poor needed help getting to work and to medical care, so $2,709.32 was spent for gasoline, Greyhound bus tickets and city bus tickets. $3,755.23 was spent for food for our emergency food pantry. To assist needy students, $1,284.08 was spent. Client reimbursement, etc. totaled $825.34. The total amount disbursed for the third quarter came to $25,190.95.
The Lord has blessed Good Shepherd Parish with this out-reach ministry that is sorely needed here in our Franklin County Community.

 What's so special about this?

fairtrade-logo.gif
Work of Human Hands is part of a Fair Trade movement that offers a clear and just alternative to the conventional system. Fair Trade is based on direct relationships with low-income producers overseas eliminating the intermediaries who exploit low-income producers and drive up the prices of the goods we buy. 90% of the sale money is used to guarantee artisans a fair price for their products, access to credit and training and the stability of long-term relationships rooted in the principles of mutual respects and economic justice. And it creates opportunities for us to make meaningful connections with the people overseas who produce goods we consume here in the United States.

Catholic Relief Services is a non-profit organization.

The other 10% that stays here at Good Shepherd will go to help our twin parish, St. Martin De Porres in Belize.  Not only that, but any additional donations made over the weekend will be added to that 10%.

What makes this a Win Win?

With Work of Human Hands and Fair Trade you get beautiful, fairly traded handcrafts and people like Yiga who produced them get hope for a better future for themselves and their families.

Yiga Hadija is a basket weaver in Uganda. Her father passed away when she was young, forcing her to quit school and support herself by selling crafts. Hadija, now 41 years old, sells her baskets through Work of Human Hands. The steady work Hadija receives from basket making allows her and her husband to send their children to school and helped them build a new home.

Work of Human Hands is a partnership between Catholic Relief Services and SERRV.  CRS and SERRV International are nonprofit organizations.  For more information check out www.crsfairtrade.org
